Iowa vs Michigan State Recap

Iowa football is back. At least, for one game. The hometown Hawks came into Kinnick all gas, no brakes, and never looked back. You absolutely love to see it after a very disappointing first two games in the season. The defense was their normal dominant selves, special teams was great, the run game was utilized, and Petras didn't screw it up.

Recap

Tyler Goodson opened the scoring with a 3 yd rushing TD. Petras followed that with 14 yd pass to Brandon Smith. Second quarter, Iowa opened the scoring with another Goodson rushing TD. Next, Charlie Jones ran a punt 54 yds back for a TD, followed almost immediately by Riley Moss returning an interception 54 yds for a pick six. Iowa led 35-0 at half. Mekhi Sargent added 2 rushing TD's in the second half and the Iowa defense did give up 1 TD in the third quarter for a final of 49-7. Iowa came away with their first win of the season in commanding fashion.

Takeaways

This game was all Iowa, all day. The offense put up 405 yards and the defense forced 3 interceptions. The game plan was finally tailored to a new quarterback and Petras' numbers showed it. 15/27 for 167 yards, 1 TD, and no picks. This is the type of game from Spencer that will allow us to win. Don't ask too much from him, establish the run, and let the offensive line eat. The offensive line did eat to the tune of 226 yards rushing led by Tyler Goodson with 113 yds on 14 carries and 2 TD's. This is exactly what Iowa football is about. Hammer the run and keep the pressure off your QB. Petras still missed throws, but it didn't matter because Iowa played like Iowa. The last big takeaway from the offense is Smith-Marsette who? Iowa played next man up and did not miss a beat with the top perimeter receiver suspended. The defense played as perfect of a game as you could ask for. Rocky Lombardi (all time great football name) had thrown for 300+ yards every game this year so far. Iowa held him to 227 yards, no TD, and 3 picks. The Spartan offense never got started and Iowa made them look like a JV team holding them to only 59 yards rushing and forcing 10 punts. This Iowa defense is the real deal and it was great to see the offense finally win a game for them. Last week, it appeared like Iowa's season was DOA and we might be seeing the end of Coach Kirk. I have no idea what Coach did to pull this locker room together, but it worked. The team looked like a team and finished a game. We will have to see if this is a one game flash in the pan or if they run the table. At this point, I feel either is possible. Minnesota is looming large Saturday.

GO HAWKS!!!
