Iowa vs Northwestern Preview

Alright, we know what happened last week and we are moving on. New game this week. Iowa returns to Kinnick to play Northwestern. The Wildcats are coming off a monster 43-3 win over Maryland and will be riding that high all the way to Iowa City. A dominant opening game for Northwestern, but it was against Maryland. It is pretty hard to lose when your defenses forces 4 turnovers and your offense doesn't turn the ball over. This is a hard game to judge Northwestern by because they should win this game 22 out of 20 times. That being said, Let's break it down.

Wildcat Offense

The offense put up 512 yards (212 passing/325 rushing) for an impressive 6.5 yard per play average. These stats were definitely helped by winning the time of possession battle, 37 minutes to 22 minutes, and only 5 penalties all game. QB Peyton Ramsey was efficient completing 23/30 for 212 yards, 1 TD, and no interceptions. The rushing attack was led by Drake Anderson with 103 yards on only 10 carries and a TD. Isaiah Bowser (Bowser is a great football name) contributed 70 yards on 23 carries and also scored a TD. The rest of the yards came from 7 other players with rushing attempts and 2 more TDs on the ground. It was an all around soul crushing performance from Northwestern.

Wildcat Defense

The biggest story here was forcing 4 turnovers, including 3 interceptions off of transfer QB Taulia Tagovailoa. They held Tagovailoa to only 94 yards and no TDs. The Wildcat defense also held the Maryland rushing attack to only 80 yards rushing. This was an impressive performance and the main reason the score was so lopsided.

Hawkeye Preview

This is definitely a prove it game for both programs. Northwestern needs a win to prove they can beat good teams and will be hungry. Iowa is coming off a tough loss at Purdue and needs a win to prevent a terrible start and a most likely disappointing season. The bottom line for this one is that Northwestern will not be able to do to Iowa what they did to Maryland. Iowa is a much more disciplined team overall and doesn't make the mental mistakes. Petras had a solid game and missed some throws but no picks. That being said, Iowa could definitely lose this game. The biggest question here is not Northwestern, but will Iowa be able to shake off the rust and play a clean game? Will they clean up the fumbles? Will another week of practice fix Petras' consistency problems? Before last week, I would of gave this game to Iowa 10 outta 10 times. Now, I feel like we have to wait and see. Petras has potential and the run game is there, Iowa just needs to turn a corner and be a better team. We will find out Saturday whether or not that happens, until then GO HAWKS!!
